Last Day At Chub Cay 2/21/2024

Good morning from what should be our last day here at Chub Cay. We have enjoyed our time here but are very ready to move on. That being said, the wind and waves are still not cooperating with our travel desires. More on that later.

Since the last post we have enjoyed our time with the Hodak family, and several other loopers, exploring the island by dinghy. There are a couple creeks that you can dinghy into at high tide, and they are full of sea life.

We must have seen 40-50 turtles. They swim around until you get close and then they are gone. Can’t believe how fast they are.

Also saw brilliant starfish and many conchs. The water is so clear that it is actually 3-1/2′ deep in this picture.

We have continued to enjoy the facilities here as well as the restaurant. They do have a great cook!

There is also a little drinking hole, The Nauti Rooster, for the workers and guest as well.

They will put up your boat shirt on the wall if you supply them with one.

We even found the shirt from our friends boat hanging on the wall! It is a small world.

We are amazed at the number of sharks we see everywhere. When the fishing boats return and clean fish they put the scraps into the harbor. They are not supposed to, but all do. This has bull sharks in the harbor all the time. Not a good place to swim.

There were 6 of them swimming around behind our boat last night. This is approximately an 8′ bull. Memphis is on a leash at all times when they are around!

Now for the fun part. We need to be in Staniel Cay by Saturday 2/24. We have been trying to get over to the Exuma’s for a week or so now, but the wind and waves have been more than we wanted to travel in. That being said, tomorrow will be moving day like it or not. I am sure Amy and Memphis will not like it. We have to move across an open section in the ocean that will be producing waves that could be up to 10′ based on Skip’s forecast. I really hope he is wrong this time. All the models we have looked at say up to 6′. We only have to cross about 38 miles in that section, but I think it will be a long 38 miles. After that we will be on the south side of Nassau and then more protected by the Exuma’s and be in shallower water. This should help diminish the waves to 1-3′ for the balance of the trip. Total distance for this jump will be around 90 miles. A long run but should be the last long run for a while. After this, we can slow down, save some fuel, and enjoy 20-30 mile moves for a couple weeks. We are not looking forward to the crossing but need to get across and conditions just don’t seem to be getting any better.

I will try to get some pictures and videos when I can but expect most of the time, I will be focused on trying to drive the waves.

We plan to send Thursday night anchored at Shroud Cay and then Friday night anchored at Wardrick Wells. This is part of the Bahamas Land and Sea Park. Looking forward to this part of the trip. The winds continue to make things challenging and will make finding good anchor holes a little tough. Then Saturday we pull into the Staniel Cay Yacht Club for a week with friends that fly in Saturday morning. We can’t wait.

I will do another post when we arrive in Staniel Cay. Until then please continue to cross all the parts you can for us to have a safe and easy as possible crossing to the Exuma’s!

Hope you have a great week. Spring is just around the corner for those up north!

My proofreader is still asleep this morning, so enjoy all my writing errors in this post!!
