Last Day In The Bahamas! 3/30/2024

Since the last post we spent our last day on Green Turtle Cay and enjoyed relaxing and touring the island a little more with a golf cart, had a great last dinner out at the Green Turtle Club, and moved over 100 miles to the West End on Grand Bahama Island.

Last day and night at Green Turtle Cay:

Pano of the dock and the harbor at Green Turtle.

View as the sun is setting over the trees from our dinner table!

Lots of dollar bill bars in the Bahamas as well as Florida. One more Who Dat dollar with the sticker! Would love to hear if anyone ever sees one of our stickers on their travels!

Wednesday morning we got up early to take advantage of the rising tide to leave Green Turtle as well as getting through Indian Cay cut while the tide was +2′.

Picture taken by a buddy boat as we pulled out at sunrise from Green Turtle. Notice the great channel markers, a few old fenders to make one side of the channel. You hug the marked side!

We had to run 118 miles from Green Turtle to the West End, so we had to make time and ran at 26-28 MPH to make the cut before the tide went down too much. I was nervous all day for that cut, as it is marked for visual navigation only and it was a rough and cloudy day. We did arrive in time for the tide to still be plus 2′ and that gave us the 6′ I was looking for. Good thing, as we only got as shallow as 6’3″ over the coral heads!

We arrived at the West End and into our slip at Old Bahama Bay Marina just after 12:30PM. Not a bad run, but once again we never saw more than 20′ of water and most of the time the depth finders were reading 10-16′. I am looking forward to the crossing tomorrow as we will be running in deep water all the way to Florida.

Pulling into Old Bahama Bay Resort and Marina.

This is a well-protected marina, which is what we needed for Thursday and Friday with the storms and winds that were predicted.

This time the weather forecasters were correct, and we saw 40+ knot winds Thursday afternoon into Friday morning. As I write this the winds are calming to 10-15 knots for the day and then dropping more tonight for our crossing to Florida tomorrow.

My view out as I sit and write this post. Not a bad place to write from.

So this is the end of our time in the Bahamas. We arrived February 13th in Bimini and have traveled to the following islands: Bimini, Chub, Shroud, Staniel, Bell, O’Brien, Warderick Wells, Normans, Highbourne, Eleuthera, Spanish Wells, Harbor Island, Elbow Cay, Great Guana, Cay, Green Turtle Cay, and now Grand Bahama. This has been a great journey, but we are ready to get back to the States and some better food choices!

You can follow the dotted line to all the places we have traveled.

Tomorrow’s trip will be 95 miles to Fort Pierce FL. We are taking advantage of the 3-4 MPH Gulf Stream and let it push us north a little.

I will post again from Florida, not sure when, as we have some re-supplying to do Monday. Hope everyone has a very Happy Easter and start to next week.
