Making Our Way West 7/15/2024

Since the last post we spent one more day in Kingston Canada, moved to Trenton, Canada, and started up and across the Trent-Severn Waterway. The waterway connects Lake Ontario to Georgian Bay, part of Lake Huron.

Our last day in Kingston was filled with rain for the entire day. We went out for a great lunch with our new friends from Resonance, a beautiful 57 Marlow.

A little history lesson about Kingston.

The next morning, we got on our way early for our run to Trenton, Canada. This would be our last day in Lake Ontario before entering into the Trent-Severn Waterway.

Amy and I decided to swim in all the Great Lakes several years ago, so we have now swum in 4 of the 5 Great Lakes! The only one we have left is Erie.

Arriving in Trenton.

Pano of this very large marina.

We explored the town and once again found ourselves in an area with a lot of history.

The marina is also right across the river from a Canadian Airforce Base.

We spent two nights here to explore the town, learn about the Trent-Severn Waterway (Trent), and stock the boat for the next two weeks.

After a great night out, we left the next morning to begin the Trent-Severn Waterway.

Getting ready to enter the Trent-Severn Waterway!

Picture taken by a buddy boat still in the marina.

It was not a far journey, but it did take most of the day.

Entering the first lock in the Trent. The locks are only 23′ wide, so it is fun to pull into and out of the narrow lock walls.

A lot of towns we had not heard of before, but we will be visiting over the next two weeks.

We are going upbound on the Trent. We will be going up almost 350′ over the waterway in the next two weeks.

Coming into lock two.

View of the falls in the river running alongside the canal system. We go in and out of the river before and after locks.

There are many spectacular views from the top side of most of the locks.

The canal can be very narrow in many areas.

We did 7 locks the first day and moved to Glen Ross before staying on a free lock wall for the night.

Like I said, there are some really narrow areas I have to drive through.

Most of the locks have manual doors that are opened by turning these handles around 12 times.

I helped them open several doors to get my exercise in.

The next morning, we left at 7:30am to arrive at lock 8 when it opened at 9am. The lock hours are 9am to 6PM daily. If you stay on the topside of the lock, then you can start and move to the next lock before they open.

Day two in the Trent we moved from Glen Ross to Campbellford.

Again, a short run but lots of locks.

Sometimes it is hard to determine which way to go! I am so glad we have good charts.

Coming into one of the larger lift locks.

Arriving in Campbellford. We spent one night here and really explored the town. We arrived by 11:30am so we had the entire day to see the town.

This is a famous Canadian Bakery that was closed on the two days we were in town! Probably a good thing.

We were tied to the wall in town with power for the night.

The person that designed the Toonie was from Campbellford. This is a huge Toonie in the park.

There is also a great park with falls and a suspension bridge.

Memphis was not a fan of crossing the bridge, but she did it!

There is also a chocolate plant in town. We walked to the plant and picked up a few items to go with red wine at night. They did not let Memphis into the store even though she is a Chocolate Lab! Go figure!

It was a very full day and lots of walking. We ended the day with a great meal out with our friends from Resonance.

Today we got moving before the first lock opened and traveled to Hastings, Canada. We will be here for one evening before moving on to Peterborough for two nights.

Again a short distance today but it took over 6 hours to arrive here in Hastings. We did arrive just before the rains started which was great. Locking in the rain is not fun for anyone.

Waiting for the first lock. We are on the right with our buddy boat Resonance behind us. Our two boats really filled the locks!

Arriving at Hastings Township Marina.

I will post this and then Amy and I will go explore the town as the rain has stopped.

I hope you all have a great week, and I will try to post again before we get out of the Trent.
