Up The Ohio 10/17/2023

We waited to pull up the anchor until some of the fog burned off. We also called the Olmstead Lock Master and were told not to rush, as he had 7 large south bound barges to lock through ahead of us.

We pulled up the anchor at 7:55am and were quickly out of the Miss River.

I forgot to mention that when we took Memphis out this morning, she had to go so badly that she did not wait until we got completely to shore! So, she was the first, and only, one of us to go into the Miss River! Needless to say, she got a full bath and shampoo when we stopped today!

As we took the left turn up the Ohio River, our fuel efficiency ended! It was fun while it lasted.

This is a shot of the Ohio/Miss junction on the plotter.

At this point we were dodging barges and making our way to the Olmstead Lock. I had Amy call once again, as they like to talk with women more than men! As we arrived at the lock around 10am, we just pulled right in without waiting. Two other loop boats had been waiting for over 4 hours to lock through.

I think I forgot to mention, that when we took the left turn up the Ohio River, the navigational markers flipped from red on the left to red on your right! No problems for me, but one of our fellow loopers had a little trouble with this leaving the lock and almost got into shallow water. I called to him on the radio, and he was very appreciative!

That was it for locks today, and this was the beginning of us going up instead of down in the locks. We had a short day, only 56 miles, to Paducah. This was planned so we could spend a little time walking this neat little town.

After we arrived, we washed the Miss off the boat, and Memphis. Everything was just thick with muddy water. Then a walk into town and picked a great steak house for dinner. Doe’s Eat Place, had great filets, but ran out of baked potatoes. We survived, thanks for worrying.

Got to relax a little and enjoy a bottle, ok maybe two, of wine. I am getting a little worried we will have enough wine to make Florida where we plan to get another shipment from Deloach!

Tomorrow is a short day, just 45 or so miles to Lake Barkley and Green Turtle Bay Resort and Marina. We plan to relax and enjoy there for 5 nights. We should see some old friends and see the town of Grand Rivers KY.

Hope you have a great night and day tomorrow.
